Holy Cross Baseball Splits Against Navy in Double Header

Last Sunday the Crusaders faced off against Patriot League rival Navy in a double header at Murray Stadium in Providence, Rhode Island. The Crusaders won the first game of the outing 6-3. Holy Cross got onto the board first after Junior Thomas Russo connected and sent a ball into left field to bring Cam O’Neill in during the bottom of the second inning. Holy Cross pitcher Brendan King pitched five consecutive scoreless innings before Navy scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning. In the bottom of the sixth, the Crusaders responded in a big way, scoring five runs on four hits. Among the contributors in the sixth inning were Anthony Critelli, Alex Voitik and Thomas Russo. Navy only brought home one man in the top of the seventh, meaning Holy Cross would hang on to a convincing 6-3 lead.

The second game of the evening would go in favor of Navy. They got out to an early lead, scoring two runs on two hits in the second inning. The Crusaders responded quickly, scoring a run in the second off of an RBI double from Russo and again in the third inning when freshman Critelli and Austen Masel hit back-to-back homers. Navy tied the game 3-3 in the top of the fourth inning and added five runs during the sixth and seventh innings to give them an 8-3 lead. During the bottom of the seventh, the Crusaders attempted to mount a comeback with Bill Schlich and Josh Hassell bringing runs in. During the bottom of the eight, the Crusaders brought the score within one run, but Navy would ultimately pull away to win 11-8.    

Holy Cross Softball Picks Up Two Wins Against Navy

The Crusaders were able to go undefeated against Navy last Sunday in West Point, New York. Emily Krisanda hit a solo home run with two outs in the top of the first inning, giving the Crusaders momentum right away. In the bottom of the first Navy responded with one run of their own to tie the game heading into the second. Holy Cross took the lead in the third inning after Taylor Wahler brought Gabby Muniz home from third base with two outs in the inning. Then, in the top of the fifth inning, Wahler would hit a two-run homer off of the scoreboard that would put the Crusaders ahead 4-1. Navy was able to pick up one run in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Crusaders would hold onto their two run lead to close the game 4-2.

In the second game of the afternoon, Navy took the lead first in the top of the first inning. Holy Cross matched in the bottom, bringing the game to a 1-1 tie heading into the second inning. The tie would remain until the top of the sixth inning when Emily Krisanda’s RBI double gave the Crusaders a 3-1 lead. Then, in the bottom of the sixth inning sophomore pitcher Alexandra Held was called in to handle loaded bases. After a double play and a foul out, the Crusaders headed to the dugout unscathed. Sophomore center fielder Jaclyn Brewster and Taylor Wahler both tallied RBIs in the top of the seventh giving the Crusaders a 5-1 lead. Navy would score one final run but were unable to come back. Next, the Crusaders face off against Boston University in a three-game series taking place the April 8-9.
